China's sweet and snack market is immense

According to statistics from the China National Confectionery Association (CNCA), China’s sweet and snack foods industry is no longer in its infancy with the immense market already growing at an accelerated pace.

The number of large-scale candy and chocolate makers with an annual turnover in 2011 reaching RMB 20 million stood at 331. Achieved output totaled 2.2 million tons with a sales output value of up to RMB 75 billion, increasing 24% and 31% respectively from the previous year.Total profits reached close to RMB 9 billion,a 19% increase from the previous year as well.

With the rising demand for sweet and snack foods in China and the growing per capita consumption, manufacturers are generally optimistic about the future prospects of the industry in China.

International Players Strengthening Foothold

Currently, renowned confectionery product manufacturers like Mars, Kraft, Nestle and Hershey's have all set up production facilities in China. On the retail front, these brands have also gained strong nationwide presence from chain supermarkets to small local grocery shops.

Meanwhile, many other quality international brands like Grabower and Accor have chosen to enter the Chinese market via local importers. This has thus resulted in their high turnout at the event each year.

Education and Exposure Required Especially in 2nd and 3rd-Tier Cities

Confectionery consumption in China is still at an infant stage in comparison with its matured western counterparts as Chinese generally perceive western confectionery as luxury products and therefore tend to minimize consumption.

Other contributing factors are familiarity and exposure. Locals have a different palate and eating habits, and are also not exposed as much to western confectionery.

China's relatively undeveloped confectionery market together with its huge population and their increasing disposable income means vast potential for growth. With adequate education and exposure, especially in second and third-tier cities, habitual consumption of confectionery is set to rise in the coming years.
