Hong Kong International Tea Fair 2012 Fair Report
The 4th Hong Kong International Tea Fair organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from August 16 – 18, 2012. The event served as a perfect platform for practitioners and industry players to source for new tea products and collect the latest market intelligence.
Running into its 4th edition, the fair presented 298 exhibitors from 12 countries and regions including the Chinese mainland, Sri Lanka, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Kenya, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam, as well as Iran, which participated for the first time. The fair did not only present exhibitors from major tea producing countries from around the world, but also featured major pavilions from Fujian, Guizhou and Yunnan and inaugural pavilions from Shannxi and Tongxiang from Zhejiang.
Major exhibit categories ranged from tea (Pu’er tea, oolong tea, black tea, green tea, and herbal tea), processed tea and tea products, tea packaging and processing equipment, tea testing services, tea bar and organisations, to tea craft and media services. Dedicated zones this year were Friends of Tea, offering bakery products and confectionery items, Tea Ware and Branding and Design Services.
The 2012 fair attracted 11,994 trade visitors from 47 countries and regions, representing a strong growth of 15% over the previous edition. Top ten visiting foreign countries and regions were the Chinese mainland, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Macau, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore.
The first two days of the fair was dedicated to trade, allowing manufacturers, dealers, trade buyers, researchers and industry professionals to exchange market information and establish business contacts. In order to facilitate exhibitors to meet with new buyers, “Chinese Tea Party” was launched, providing invaluable opportunities for overseas buyers to meet with tea producers from the Chinese mainland.
Besides, a wide range of trade events were also organised to enhance global tea trading. At the International Tea Industry Conference, global experts shared on the latest trends in the Chinese and Western tea markets and offered brand-building success stories. A seminar on “Innovative marketing for tea business” was also held, attracting wide attention from trade buyers who were looking for branding tips for tea business. Tea tasting sessions on a wide variety of teas such as Indian tea, Ceylon tea, Chrysanthemum tea, Tieguanyin tea and more were organised to enhance tea promotion across countries and borders.
At the core of the fair was the International KamCha Competition (Hong Kong Style Milk Tea), which gathered regional winners from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Shenzhen and Toronto to compete for the final championship. This year representatives from Toronto championed the game.
In addition, Tea Competition 2012 was also held to recognise tea companies with outstanding teas and branding strategies. Winning teas were given the opportunities to be on display in selected hotels and restaurants in Hong Kong for promotion and brand building.
Opening to the general public on the last day of the fair, visitors were given opportunities to gain a better understanding on tea culture. Tea Forums with educational values on topics such as teapot appreciation, cooking with tea, beauty of tea drinking and so on were organised, allowing the general public to enrich their knowledge on tea. A workshop on pairing tea with food, and tea art performance were also organised to spice up the fairground as well as to promote tea culture. The fair was further enriched by the display of tea wares and over 80 books at the Tea Gallery.
Running concurrently were two other events – the Food Expo and the International Conference & Exhibition of Modernization of Chinese Medicine & Health Products. Ridding on the success of this year, the next edition scheduled on August 15-17, 2013 will definitely bring forth more exciting opportunities for industry players and participants.
