With the National Program for Organic Production (NPOP) the government shows the willingness to make India a key player in the organic business. Several states in India have either declared themselves as organic states or are promoting organic farming and production vigorously. For example the State Department of Agriculture in Kerala has made a significant turn-around to promote organic production and marketing of organic food by launching a programme and policy for ‘Organic Sustainability of Kerala’, named ‘Jaivakeralam’ (organic Kerala) seven years ago.
With the urban middle class of 150 to 200 million people, India is offering an enormous number of potential buyers and the environmental, health and social effects are increasing the awareness for the importance of food and quality of nutrition.
